Turkish Coffee: A Dino Guide

Dear Aunty Em,

I know Shelly said she would make coffee and show you how but she fell asleep. I took over and made it as I have watched enough times by now to be able to do it.

image

Step One: get a turkish coffee pot.

image

Step Two: Fill it up with water to the bend in the pot.

image

Step Three: Add a spoon of sugar to the water and stir.

image

Step Ladder: This is a three cup pot so add three spoons of finely ground coffee and spread it out a little without squashing it down.

image

Step Five: Set it to a medium heat.

image

Step Six: Watch from a safe distance. An unwatched coffee pot ALWAYS boils over.

image

Step Seven: Try not to freak out when it begins to resemble the tar pits that got your cousin Lenny.

image

image

Step Eight: Keep watching and listening til it starts to bubble like this.

image

image

Evil Stepmother: When the coffee all goes under the bubbles take it off the heat.

image

Step Ten: Get your coffee cups ready.

image

image

Step Eleven: Spoon out the coffee grounds and put it in the coffee cups. A spoonful per cup.

image

image

Step Twelve: Stir and appreciate the lovely crema.

image

image

Step Thirteen: Pour.

image

Stepford Wives: Wonder how long it will be before you are able to pour coffee without spilling a lot of it beside each cup.

image

Step Fifteen: Burn your fingertips bringing the coffee to the table.

image

Step Sixteen: Wake up your human and feed them coffee.

image

image

Step Right Up: Don’t forget that this stuff needs to settle and never swirl the coffee while drinking it because you end up with a mouth full of grounds. The last bits of your cup of coffee are to be approached carefully.

Drinking this is akin to pumping normal coffee into your veins. Enjoy!

With love,
Your dino buddy xx

Dino Does Vienna

Hey Mikey!

So it’s been a while since I posted. You might think this is because I have been adventuring so much, but you wouldn’t necessarily be correct there. SOMEONE keeps forgetting to bring me places. I was promised a trip to Dublin to see the Backstreet Boys with Shelly and her friends but the beasts had fun without me! In fairness to Shelly, she woke up ten minutes before her bus was  leaving from across town and she had to get to the train station in a panic so that she could get a train and then a different bus in the hopes that she would make it to her flight (which she did, and I hear the surprise was totally worth it. Amy freaked right out. Would have been nice to see that, SHELLY.)
Anyways, to make up for forgetting me so many times, she has been bringing me to a few places lately. We went on a tour of Vienna, she brought me cycling in the countryside, and I got to meet Flat Stanley.

First off, most recently, Flat Stanley. That was just a couple of days ago.
Flat Stanley told me that his Dad bought him and his brother a big bulletin board for their bedroom for all of their pictures and paintings. Stan’s Dad isn’t as good at DIY as he’d like to think he is though, and the big board fell down in the middle of the night and squashed Stanley! Stanley travelled all the way from Alabama to Vienna in the post to Shelly’s friend Lauren, who is bringing him around like Shelly does for me.

We got Ice Cream in Tichy before we went to have a look around the city. This was after I had done my tour with Shelly so I was able to show him around and tell him about the different things. It’s nice to be the tour guide every so often!

Then, our Vienna adventure!
The day that Shelly brought me around town was lovely and sunny. We set off on bikes and went straight for the city centre.

Our first stop was Karlskirche

I got to see loads of statues here. The guy on the left is Mozart, he’s kind of a big deal. Goethe is on the right.

Then we passed by the Parliament and the Rathaus. Rathaus is not full of rats though, it’s only called that. It’s actually just the town hall.

Healthy Tasty Lunch!

We stopped for lunch beside the Votiv church. I had some tasty tulips and Shelly shared her coffee and chocolate banana bread (which I helped to make!)

After another while, we got to Schwarzenbergplatz.
There is a huge fountain and some more statues there. I had another snack of dandelions and then climbed a tree, as ya do.

We went home shortly after that, which leads me to my last couple of pictures..

Our adventure to Wachau! We got on a train in Vienna that was to bring us to a town called Melk.

Casual Dinosaur waits casually for a train

We got to Melk, oriented ourselves, and set off towards Krems. A town that is roughly 40km from Melk. It started raining at the start of the journey so I spent a lot of time hiding in pockets. This dino doesn’t do rain.

When the rain stopped, I ventured out of my warm hiding place to meet one of the locals.

This was us, introducing ourselves.

I was kindof giddy, and asked for a piggy back (snaily back?) I didn't wait for a yes....

...Which annoyed my new friend who curled up just enough to throw me off. I started to feel like we had overstayed any sort of a welcome so I casually continued on my journey.

This journey didn’t have as many stops as our trip around the city. This is almost at the halfway point

Ice Krem

and this was at the end… We stopped for ice cream in Krems before getting back on the train and returning to Vienna.

So that’s it for now! I hope you’re having a fun easter so far. Here in Vienna we dyed some eggs and have eaten some chocolate.

Take Your Dino To Work Day(s)

Hi Mikey!

Things in Vienna are still good. Today and yesterday I have been a career dinosaur. I got up early in the morning, drank some more of that coffee stuff (It’s still yucky) and then went out and about.

20140325_062906

I had grapes for brekkie. Dino’s gotta be healthy.

20140325_064537

This was a more dino-friendly drinking option but I think I’m going to stick with dinotea.

20140325_122711

Waiting for the bus!

20140325_164832

I even got my very own seat.

I went with Shelly to where she works. I waited on the bench beside her and when we got in the bus, I got to sit in my own seat.

20140325_165505 20140325_172253

I stayed in Shelly’s bag and napped while she was working, but she brought me out for lunch.

After work we had to go grocery shopping. We went to Merkur which is a HUGE place with lots of places to hide, so naturally I decided to run off to play hide and seek. First I hid inside an Easter ornament..

Took her ages to find me in here.

Peekaboo!

Then when we went to buy vegetables I disappeared again. Shelly wasn’t so enthusiastic this time. She said I had to stay near her and stop running off because someone might mistake me for a turnip and try to buy me. I got annoyed right back and called her the turnip head. Things got a bit heated. We made friends again shortly thereafter though.

20140325_211207

Our walk home was lovely and we stopped to look at some trains out the back of Shelly’s building.

20140325_211210

I decided to be a helpful dinosaur and check the mail for Shelly.

20140325_211232

And then I sliced the bread! I was knackered after this one and wanted to go to bed but we went out to town.

20140326_064615

Plenty of room for a dino on the tram at night!

IMG-20140326-WA0006

When we got home I was really tuckered out and I snuggled in with Puffalump. Puffalump is even wiser than Yoda.

This morning I got up early again. No coffee this time, I’m not making that mistake again. Today was an extreme sports day! I got to ride the handlebars to Igor’s office.

I even helped to park the bike and lock it. I am getting to be a real profi with all of this human stuff. Perhaps when I get back to Ireland I can get wellies like yours and help you and ganga doing the gardening.

I got to meet Igor's colleagues

We had a very serious meeting

..and followed it up with some serious cake.

I am going to sign off for now and help Shelly make some banana bread!

Spotty bananas!

Stowing Away

Dear Mikey,

I hope you’re not mad at me but yesterday afternoon before your Aunty Shelly left to go back to Vienna, I hid in her bag. I didn’t really think it through and I just wanted to go travelling. All dinosaurs want to go out on the open road, I saw the opportunity and I took it.

20140323_090939

Shelly found me when she got back and she was annoyed. She said that you wouldn’t know where I am and that you would be worried, and that I should write to you and to tell you where I am. I am going to adventure around for a while but so that you know I am ok, I will send you pictures and stories.

When we got to Galway to her friend’s house, I put my head outside of the bag. I could smell food. I climbed up onto the table (and nobody saw me!) and I ATE THE CHIPS. They were delicious.

Yummy chips! We didn't have these in the cretaceous period. I'm a vegetarian so I didn't eat any of that stinky chicken.

I jumped back down to the bag after I ate all of the chips and giggled to myself when I heard Shelly and Amy wonder where their chips were. I was so full from all of the chips that I fell asleep.

It was really dark when we left Galway. I waved bye bye to the city and was a little bit worried but I felt safe when I snuggled into Shelly'S bag to have a nap until we reached the airport.

We got off the bus in the airport and went through security. Shelly looked like she was still asleep, and she was rubbing her eyes a lot and trying to wake up – it was still dark outside and someone said something about 4:15am. I didn’t care too much, I had made Shelly’s hat into a sleeping bag.

The coffee says "Szeri". I thought her name was Shelly?

Shelly got coffee. It seems to be a magic drink that makes you wake up or something. I don’t know. I tasted it, it was yuck.

We went down even more corridors to find our gate. I got to ride the travelator!

It was wobbly and I was worried I would fall but it was ok!

It is very important to read all of the security information.

I woke up in Slovakia!

I woke up in Slovakia!

When I woke up we were in a whole other country called Slovakia. But we weren’t staying there, next stop was Vienna in Austria. We had to drive there and when I climbed out of Shelly’s bag in the car, she saw me! I got to ride up front for the whole journey after that.

Look at the sign, it says Wien, which Shelly said is German for Vienna. I don't know what German is though. I just smiled and nodded because she wouldn't stop talking. I think it was because of all of that coffee.

So anyways, we got back to Shelly’s place and she introduced me to all of the other little guys living there. They all seem really nice. She told me that she would help me set up this blog so that you know that I am ok and then I have to go to bed. She even made me a little dino bed!

20140324_175353

This is the sparkliest pony I have ever met.

20140324_175412

This is Yoda. He’s really old and talks a little strange. He’s nice though and said if questions I have, to him I should go.

20140324_175427

This lady is a little full on. She’s a princess. Lumpy Space Princess. She ran away from home too and lives in the forest now. She told me to get my lumps away from her can of beans.

20140324_175510

There are other dinosaurs here! They’re really nice guys and we’re going to have tea together tomorrow.

20140324_175556

I went down one shelf from my new friendly dino friends and landed in the middle of a sword fight. They were shouting something about “precious” and one true ring. I left them to it and kept exploring…

20140324_175645

This robot gave me a big fright. He has sparks in his tummy! But he’s friendlier than he looks. He’s joining me and the other dinos tomorrow for dinotea.

20140324_175712

The BIGGEST dinosaur I have ever met!

20140324_175802

On the way to the next room I got lost in the forest.

20140324_175822

There was another new friend sitting on top of a picture. She wasn’t too chatty though.

20140324_180012

This bear has travelled a lot. It’s been to Hungary, Poland, Ireland, Austria… All over!!

20140324_175940

This guy just kept calling me Gunther and talking about princesses.

20140324_175911

I even got to go to outer space!

20140324_175850

I wanted to read a book. This one has a dino on the front so I thought it might be nice but Shelly said “not tonight”.

Well anyways, It’s my bed time now.  I hope you had a fun day too and I hope you sleep well tonight. I will tell you more adventures next week! Tell your Mom and Dad I said Hi and give Beth a dinokiss from me.

Your buddy,

Dinosaul
